Great News!

Well everyone, I have great news: I got a job!

I've officially been hired as a School Based Drug Counselor for 2 high schools in my area. I'm ecstatic, of course; I get to work directly with kids who may be at a crossroads in their life, so hopefully I will be able to make a difference. Even if that light at the end of the tunnel is still light years away, I may now be able to at least feel some of it's warmth on my face.

This does, however, present a bit of a problem for my blog. I hold myself out to be a college student living far below the poverty line (which I still am) but this job brings me a little closer to the actual poverty line. Not wanting to mislead my followers, I've been contemplating the theme of my blog. I presented the question to my boyfriend the other night:

Me: What do you think I should write about? I am still budgeting, and I am still in college, but...
Boyfriend: Well write about whatever you want to write about.
Me: I have to have a theme, don't I?
Boyfriend: Seinfeld didn't have a theme.
Me: Touche.

My boyfriend makes a excellent point (he usually does), and coupled with the fact that I live in this lovely little town known as "Reality" (perhaps you've visited?), one very important lesson of life comes to mind: Time is an illusion. Do what you love now, because later may never be. With that in mind, I like knowing what I'm getting when I visit my favorite blogs. I like knowing I can count on some for a laugh and a pick me up, and on others for fashion advice. My own passion, however, lies with nutrition and travel.

A favorite hobby of mine is remaking comfort foods in nutritious ways. I usually figure if my beer drinking/mac 'n' cheese loving baseball coach of a boyfriend approves, I'm probably good to go. In our house, I am a legend. Garlic mashed potatoes? Chili? Lasagna? Bring it on. I like to think I'm a regular ol' Iron Chef of nutrition.

Also, in my mind, I've traveled the world countless times. Plus I own a car, so...according to that bulletproof logic, I consider myself fully qualified to write about travel.

So shall I combine the two?

I think I just might. But, regardless of what I end up writing about, I hope my love of sarcasm and awkwardness will still show through. Quick question though, when you visit my blog, what are you hoping to find?

Sunday Blog Hop Shibley Smiles

  1. Hurray to the job! It sounds excellent!

Nutrition and travel are two of my favourite things also so I suggest you write in that theme! :D

  2. Congratulations!! Keep the name of your blog, it's where you were, where you started from, it's a great story!! The new job will be amazing, reaching out to all those confused children. I'm a pharmacologist, so heaven help my children if they touch drugs, i managed a fulfilling life without so much as a puff of a cigarette!! Look at Amy Winehouse today, enough said, love Posie

  3. Congratulations!!! How exciting for you!! You are your blog and as long as aliens aren't going to take you away I will still be visiting your great site!! I love the idea of your abiltiy to turn fun food into a more nutritioanl choice. Since I'm a mom those tips would be great. Plus, being on a budget yourself, you may come up with tips on how to save money while still cooking good and good for you food that I have not thought about yet!! I'm thrilled for you and look foward to reading about your next chapter!!

  4. Hello. I just stumbled upon your blog & love it! I am also a student but am fortunate to have a scholarship. Well done of the job BTW ... & I agree with the others, keep the name.

  5. congratulations on the job!

I remember leaving college ... it was over 6 years ago when I graduated, just when the economy was going in the tanker. I had a degree in Social Work & Psychology and had no idea what I was going to do. Thankfully, I landed a job about three months later, two days before I got married. It was the best feeling ever!

Stopping by from today's blog Hop & new follower - hope you stop by! Have a great week!

  6. congrats on the job! following back :)

  7. thanks for the follow and I am following back! I just got here to your blog so I say...Keep the name and write whatchya want! ;)

  8. Congratulations on your new job! That sounds like you will definitely be able to reach some students and make a difference. I completely understand that goal. As a new teacher, my hope is that I can do the same for at least one child this school year. I hope you have a great time.

I am a new follower, but I don't think you necessarily need to worry about sticking to an exact theme for your blog. Write about what you enjoy and readers will see that and have fun on your blog, too. I, of course, being selfish, would love to read more about your new job as you go along!

Have a great Sunday and thanks for following my blog!

  9. Write about what makes you happy! Now I want mac n cheese....

  10. First off, congrats on the job and what an amazing job at that. You will certainly be challenged but the rewards will also be immense.

Secondly, I would be thrilled to read about healthy remakes of comfort food. Fantastic idea.

Lastly, I think a blog is fluid. Mine started out when I was pregnant and on bed rest. I blogged mostly about giveaways I wanted to win. It has morphed from that into a place where I chronicle my joys, disappointments, challenges, and I throw in some foodie stuff and host my own giveaways for good measure. I think of my blog as a little free therapy. I wish you all the luck in your writing adventures and your new job <3

  11. Congrats on the job and thanks for stopping by my blog! I am now following yours as well!

  12. Congrats!!!!! I'm a new follower and would love for you to check out my blog and follow back!!

  13. Hey! I think it's totally normal for your blog to change as your life does. And I certainly love food blogs. I've become very interested in recipes that are on the cheap (like way super budget recipes) since my husband and I are about to move for him to start graduate school. Since you've been there I'd love to hear what kinds of meals you had! Is that weird? Because I'm totally obsessive about food (as you can see from my blog).

  14. Congratulations on the job! Thanks for stopping by my page and for the sweet comment. Here to follow you back. Have a wonderful day!

What I like about your blog:
Humour, health info, counselling info (taking my MEd in Counselling makes me mega love this site).

  16. Definitely keep the name. You probably will still be digging out from under some college related debt for a little while and you can even inspire others on how to get themselves from where you have been to where everyone wants to be: Easy Street. Thanks for the follow on Ducks n a Row...I am also a new follower and subscriber of your site!

  17. Congratulations!

How I think when it comes to blogging is that I blog for 'me'. I don't worry about attracting readers or sticking to a theme. I find if I do those things then it becomes exhausting and then I just want to give up.

Blog about what you want to blog about, even if it's a post about Mac & Cheese, it came from your heart and brainpower. That's how I look at it. :D

  18. Congrats on the new job! Write about whatever you feel passionate about. The best blogs are the ones where you can feel the love for the subject coming through the screen.

  19. Hi! I'm stopping by from the Super Stalker Sunday Hop! Thanks so much for linking up with us and stalking around! :) Be sure to come join us again next Sunday for a fun filled day of stalking! =D

  20. Hi, visiting from ftlob, congrats on the new job! So, I watched Seinfeld, love Seinfeld "...but I don't wanna be a pirate!" That's how much I love for the blog, consider it your journey, journey in finances, food, style/fashion, but whatever it is be true to you.
